Horizon Achievement Gift(s) for the
King High School Class of 2009
The King High School is happy to announce a new scholarship program that provides up to $1000 to members of the Class of 2009 just for attending one of the schools listed below. No essay, test scores, interview, etc. are needed to qualify. Merely proof of enrollment by a document from the school delivered by the student to the gifts’ donor showing classes signed up for in the fall of 2009, and name and phone number of a person who can be called at the school to confirm enrollment. The gift will be paid to the student in August or September 2009 after proof of enrollment is received. Proof of enrollment must be received no later than September 30, 2009. This program is made available throught the generosity of Tim Dowling, one of the founders of the King High School Academic Booster Club.

Amounts Available
  • If one winner: Receives $1000
  • If two winners: Each receives $600
  • If three winners: Each receives $500
  • If more than three qualify: Three winners chosen by lottery from among all who qualify.
  • Students who attend a school listed in Group A below will also receive an extra $200.

  • Which Schools Qualify?
GROUP A - Ivy League and similar schools: Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Stanford, Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, University of Chicago, MIT, California Institute of Technology.

GROUP B - Exceptional smaller schools: Davidson, Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Carnegie Mellon, Carleton, Amherst, Williams, St. John’s (Annapolis or Santa Fe), Vassar, Grinnell, Kenyon, Middlebury, Wellesley, Smith, Swathmore, Bowdoin, Bates, Washington & Lee, Colgate, Oberlin, Macalester, Bucknell.

GROUP C - Other outstanding but larger schools: Notre Dame, Boston College, Annapolis (Navy Academy), West Point (Army Academy), Air Force Academy, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Washington University (St. Louis), University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia(Charlottesville), University of California (Berkeley), University of Michigan (Ann Arbor).

You may assume there is no way your family could afford to send you to any of these schools, so there is no point in applying. That assumption is wrong. Due to radical changes in the financial aid system last year for many private schools, it is now cheaper for many students to attend one of the schools above than a Texas public university or junior college (and the military academies of course are free). At many of the top schools, if the family’s income is $60,000 or less per year, the student attends for free (except for what the student is expected to earn during the summer and likely a job during the school year that takes little time during the week). Many of the top private schools no longer require students to take out loans, so you may be able to graduate debt free.
